This stunning volume, the latest to accompany the annual, international photography competition, will be a vibrant addition for PUP’s renowned nature publishing program.
Princeton University Press is delighted to share plans to publish Bird Photographer of the Year in North America and the United Kingdom. The book will be released in both markets on September 24, 2024, the same day winners of the annual Bird Photographer of the Year competition are announced.
With a foreword by Simon King, an award-winning nature documentary cinemaphotographer—most recently for the landmark BBC series Wild Isles, with David Attenborough—the gorgeous, large-format volume will feature more than 300 color photographs, both winning and short-listed images, from professional and amateur photographers alike and with details about the camera used for each shot. The book will be edited by Will Nicholls, a BAFTA-nominated cinematographer who directs the renowned international competition.
Robert Kirk, Publisher of Field Guides and Natural History at PUP notes, “Bird Photographer of the Year has all the elements we love in our nature titles: inspirational content and international reach. It is truly at home among PUP’s outstanding list of reference volumes, across the natural world.”
Will Nicholls adds, “We are delighted to collaborate with Princeton University Press with the aim of bringing the Bird Photographer of the Year books to birders and photographers worldwide. Our latest volume showcases bird photography at its best, with images of birdlife from every continent. We can’t wait for you to see the beautiful collection that we have created alongside PUP.”
The Bird Photographer of the Year contest, now in its ninth year, is judged by some of the world’s leading photographers and avian conservationists, who select from tens of thousands of submissions. Prize categories include Creative Imagery, Birds in the Environment, Birds in Flight, Bird Behavior, Urban Birds, Black-and-White, Best Portrait, Attention to Detail, Best Portfolio, Conservation Award, and Young Bird Photographer of the Year. Both the prize and the books celebrate the artistry and diversity of bird photography the world over and are guided by a commitment to conservation, with a portion of profits from book sales going to the charity Birds on the Brink.
We’re excited to be in such wonderful company partnering with Bird Photographer of the Year and look forward to the book’s wide release this coming autumn.
